This comes from a two-acre parcel of Adelina Estate vines, planted in 1942 on deep grey sandy loam on a clay base. It's a plot known as the Springvale Block, or sometimes simply Block Two, and it's just a stone's throw away from the iconic Wendouree vineyard. Col McBryde knows his wines and he's an unabashed fan of the legendary Château Rayas. Taking that lead, his aim here has always been to produce a Grenache of great finesse and perfume from these old Estate vines.

The fruit for the 2020 was picked on February 24th and was all destemmed (with plenty of whole berries). The wine then spent 20 days on skins before being pressed to large-format, neutral French oak for six months.

It did not take long for the settlers to identify the potential for winemaking in the Clare Valley - where vines were first planted in the early 1840s. The warm and hot summer South Australian days are often followed by cool teatime breezes which help with the ripening process and makes this a fantastic winemaking region (and place to visit!). Melbourne has a questionable reputation for changeable weather - but Clare Valley puts this to shame - blistering hot summer days quickly followed up with freezing 1°C wintery nights.

Whilst the region is well known for its award winning Rieslings, the warmer climate make it a prime growing region for consistently good vintages for a range of varietals (we recommend checking out some of the Cabernet and Shiraz coming out of Valley). Output from the area are as unique as its weather, a must visit.
