Byrne Ballarat Chardonnay
Current Vintage: 2018
Alex Byrne is a young winemaker with experience in Burgundy, South America and Australia, most recently as a winemaker at Lethbridge in Geelong.
Having made wine under his eponymous Byrne Wines label since 2011 while also working as assistant winemaker at Lethbridge, 2015 saw Alex step out on his own to focus on his myriad of personal winemaking projects. With a focus on single vineyard wines from Ballarat, and now Sunbury in Victoria, Byrne Wines produce elegant and complex Chardonnay and Pinot, which highlight the quality of their origins, and the talents of the winemaker.
The Ballarat region is steeped in history, and commonly considered to be the birthplace of Australian democracy. It seems that David and Goliath is a familiar tale in Ballarat - with the famed Eureka Stockade Rebellion, but also with wine.
Although not as well known as Geelong or the Yarra Valley, cool climate Pinot and Chardonnay shine in the Ballarat region. We're disappointed there’s no gold left - but the wine makes up for it.
