Perhaps surprisingly, given this producer's enviable reputation with Chardonnay, this is crafted entirely from Chenin Blanc. It's made using the 'traditional method' of Champagne and drawn from Voyager Estate's Weightmans Block 1, a patch of Chenin Blanc selected due to its early ripening characteristics (which results in early flavour development at low sugar levels and with excellent natural acidity).
Hand-harvested, the fruit was gently whole-bunch pressed and settled overnight before fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Following a short maturation in tank, the wine was bottled in late May where it remained on lees until October when it was disgorged with a light dosage of 4-5 g/L sugar. Cheninpagne!
Despite viticulture being barely 50 years old (with the first vines being planted in the 1960's), the Margaret River wine region has firmly established itself as a global rising star. The climate of the region is so befitting to winemaking (and similar to the French region) that it is commonly called Australia's answer to Bordeaux.
The vignerons of Australia's west coast have quickly harnessed this ancient terroir, which is suited perfectly to viticulture, and now produce 25% of Australia's premium wine. Amongst other varietals, the elegant Cabernets, Chardonnays and Sauvignon Blanc of the Margaret River won't disappoint even the most discerning of tastebuds.
